The refurbishment works to be carried out in the former public school 'Son Espanyolet' will amount to 2.2 million euros

February 4, 2010

The City Council of Palma and the Government of the Balearic Islands will begin this year with the refurbishment works in the 'Son Espanyolet' Public School's building. Once the refurbishment works have been accomplished, the building will host an educational centre for adults (CEPA), a nursery school as well as a parish hall.

The refurbishment works' budget amounts to 2,277,073.50 €, out of which the Government will be contributing 1,458,465.58€ for the educational centre for adults. The contribution made by the city council thus amounts to 818,607.92 € and will be used for the building of the nursery school and the parish hall.

The Government Junta entrusted the supervision, coordination and control of the execution of the refurbishment and expansion works in the former public school C.P. Son Espanyolet to the Municipal Company for Urban Works and Projects (EMOP).

The former 'Son Espanyolet' Public School is a school that dates back to the Spanish Republic. Due to this reason, the project contemplates the cataloguing and protection of the building, which also includes an air-raid shelter, that will also be catalogued. The Contracting Department is currently evaluating the projects developed by 8 companies and it is planned that the works will be assigned this month and begin by the middle of the year. The works will be assigned an execution period of 12 months.

With respect to the nursery school, that will be the first premises to be accomplished, will offer enough space for 74 children and will be located on the building's ground floor, thus covering a surface of 557.04 m2, and host two classrooms for each age range. The nursery school will have its own, independent entrance, separated from all the other entrances to the building.

The major refurbishment tasks will be executed in the premises that will be hosting the future 'La Balanguera' Educational Centre for Adults (CEPA), since the premises are in a really bad state. The project has assigned the semisubterranean, ground and first floors, covering a surface of 1,715.78 m2 in total, to four classrooms, an area offering different kind of services, an adaptation room, an IT room, a lab, a room for workshops, a library and offices, among others.

The works will be enhanced by the works carried out by the Council for Education during the course of last summer, whose purpose was to fit out the building's former concierge's office, i.e. an independent room that is, however, connected to the building. This room was fitted out in such a way as to host classrooms for the La Balanguera CEPA. Once the works have been accomplished, these premises will also be integrated in the building.
